If your knees have started complaining on the stairs more than they used to, hyaluronic acid probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It should be. It's one of the few joint care ingredients backed by a genuine body of clinical research, not just a good story, and here's what that research actually shows, including where the evidence is strong and where it's still developing.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already makes. It's concentrated in your eyes, skin and joints, where its job is to hold onto water and keep tissue cushioned and lubricated. Levels naturally decline with age, and in joints affected by osteoarthritis, that decline is more pronounced: both the amount and the quality of hyaluronic acid in the joint fluid drop, which means less cushioning, more friction, and more discomfort.
In a healthy joint, hyaluronic acid is a major part of the synovial fluid that lets bones move against each other smoothly. In an osteoarthritic joint, that fluid becomes thinner and less effective, so the joint loses some of its natural shock absorption. This is the reasoning behind viscosupplementation, where hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the joint to restore some of that lubrication, a treatment that's been in clinical use for knee osteoarthritis since the late 1990s. Beyond simply lubricating, current research also points to hyaluronic acid having a calming effect on joint inflammation, though exactly how much this contributes to symptom relief is still being worked out.
Supplement studies like these typically ran for a few months to a year, and most people didn't notice a difference overnight. If you're trying a joint supplement, it's worth giving it a proper run, a couple of months at least, before deciding whether it's working for you.
The same moisture-holding property that helps joints has made hyaluronic acid a familiar ingredient in skincare, where it's valued for keeping skin hydrated and plump, and it's also used in eye drops for dryness. Researchers are looking at other potential uses too, including wound healing, though that evidence is still at an early stage. Across its various uses, hyaluronic acid is generally well tolerated when taken or used as directed.
Diet plays a supporting role. Bone broth is one of the few foods that contains hyaluronic acid directly. Starchy root vegetables like sweet potato don't actually contain it, but a diet rich in them has been linked to higher natural hyaluronic acid levels, likely because of nutrients like magnesium that support the body's own production. Either way, the effect from food alone is modest. For most people, a supplement is the more direct and better-studied route.
