Glucosamine and chondroitin get most of the attention in joint care supplements, including our own Moveit Joint Care. Vitamin D and copper are also in the formula, and they do a genuinely different job worth explaining on its own.
Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal muscle function, an established, authorised claim rather than a marketing one. It's a genuinely relevant addition to a joint formula because bone and muscle health support the structures around a joint, even though it isn't acting on cartilage directly the way glucosamine or chondroitin might. It's also worth checking your levels are adequate regardless of any supplement, particularly in the UK, where a shortfall is common through the darker months. See our Vitamin D guide for the full picture.
Copper contributes to the maintenance of normal connective tissues, again an authorised claim, and connective tissue includes the tendons and ligaments that support a joint. That's a more precise way to describe copper's role than "bone strength," which isn't one of its authorised claims. Most people get enough copper from a varied diet (nuts, shellfish, wholegrains and organ meats are the richest sources), so think of it here as a small, sensible addition rather than the main reason to choose a joint supplement.
You may also see amino acids and related compounds, such as glutamic acid, glucuronic acid, glycine and proline, listed in a joint formula. These are naturally occurring components of the wider formula. We can't honestly say they "ensure maximum absorption" of the other ingredients, that's stronger than the evidence supports, so we're not going to claim it. They're part of a considered formula, not a proven absorption-boosting mechanism on their own.
Vitamin D and copper won't be why anyone chooses a joint supplement, but they're a genuinely sensible, evidence-backed addition rather than filler. For the ingredients that do the heavier lifting on joint comfort, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric and hyaluronic acid, see our joint supplement ingredients guide.
