Am I Enough for My Baby? The Worry Almost Every Mum Has

4 min read · MOCHi

The love you feel looking at your baby is enormous. But right alongside it, a quieter question can creep in: "Am I actually enough for them?" If that sounds familiar, take a breath. It's one of the most universal feelings in motherhood, and it's worth understanding where it comes from.

Where the Worry Comes From

A few things tend to feed this feeling. Social media shows the highlight reel, tidy homes, smiling babies, endlessly composed mums, not the 3am exhaustion behind it. Comparing yourself to that curated version of other people's lives is one of the fastest routes to feeling like you're falling short. On top of that, there's more parenting advice available than ever, which can turn every decision into something you second-guess. And then there's the inner critic, quick to whisper "you should be doing better" the moment something doesn't go smoothly.

Signs You're Doing Just Fine

What "enough" actually looks like

  • The basics are covered. Fed, warm, safe, and getting some sleep, even if it doesn't feel like enough sleep. That's the core of it, everything else is detail.
  • Your baby comes to you. When they're upset, tired, or scared, you're who they reach for. That's real, secure attachment in action.
  • You recover, not just avoid mistakes. A short temper on a hard day, a missed moment, that's not failure. Noticing it, and coming back gently, is what actually matters.
  • They're growing. Longer, heavier, learning new things, moving. That growth is built on what you're already doing.
  • You're worried at all. A mum who didn't care wouldn't be asking the question. Worrying about it is itself a sign of how much you care.

Small Things That Help

When the feeling shows up, a few small habits can take the edge off. Pick just three priorities for the day and let the rest wait, perfect tidiness can lose to a well-rested baby every time. Put the phone down for ten focused minutes with your baby, real eye contact does more for both of you than it sounds like it would. At the end of the day, jot down three small wins, "we laughed once", "I got us both fed", anything counts. And find one or two mum friends you can be properly honest with, "today was rough" is a sentence that helps more than it feels like it should.

A note from MOCHi

Perfect motherhood isn't a real thing to aim for, it's an illusion. Real motherhood is love, mess, laughter, and starting fresh every single day. However tired, however imperfect, you are exactly what your baby needs.

Whatever today looked like, MOCHi's range is here for the practical side, so you can spend a little less energy on logistics and a little more on the moments that matter.
