5 Mistakes to Avoid With Your Wearable Pump (And How to Make It Last)

4 min read · MOCHi

A wearable pump is a brilliant bit of kit, hands-free expressing while you get on with the rest of your day. But a few small habits can quietly wear it out faster, or make sessions less comfortable than they should be. Here are the five slip-ups we see most often, and the easy fixes.

Mistake 1

Using the wrong flange size

This is the big one. Too small, and it can pinch or rub. Too large, and you lose suction, which means less milk for more effort.

Fix

Use a flange sizing guide to check what actually fits, rather than assuming the size in the box is right for you. The correct fit is more comfortable and puts far less strain on the motor.

Mistake 2

Neglecting the valve

Noticed your suction isn't what it used to be? Nine times out of ten, it's the tiny silicone valve, not the pump itself.

Fix

Wash valves gently by hand rather than scrubbing with a stiff brush or boiling them too often, both wear the silicone out faster. Valves are a consumable part, so if suction drops, replace the valve first before assuming anything else is wrong.

Mistake 3

Getting the motor unit wet

The motor unit on top is the brain of the pump, and it should never be washed, submerged, or sterilised.

Fix

Avoid leaning too far forward while pumping and don't let the collection container overfill, both are the most common ways milk ends up where it shouldn't.

Mistake 4

Reassembling parts while they're still damp

Putting the pump back together before every part is fully dry can trap moisture inside, which is a common cause of faults over time.

Fix

Let all the silicone and plastic parts air dry completely before you reassemble. It takes a little longer, but it protects the pump's performance.

Mistake 5

Poor charging habits

Wearable pumps run on lithium batteries, which have their own likes and dislikes.

Fix

Avoid using the pump while it's plugged in and charging, stick to the original charging cable, and top the battery up before it runs completely flat rather than always waiting for zero.

A note from MOCHi

Looking after your pump is one less thing to think about when everything else feels like a lot. If a session ever feels off, check the valve and the flange fit first, that solves most issues in seconds. We're always here if you need a hand.
