A Gentle, Gluten-Free Start to Weaning

4 min read · MOCHi

Starting solids is one of those milestones that's equal parts exciting and slightly nerve-wracking, new textures, new mess, and a whole new set of questions. If you're easing in gently or keeping things gluten-free for now, here's a simple, fun way to begin.

Why Gluten-Free Grains Are a Gentle Place to Start

A baby's digestive system is still very much a work in progress at six months, so it makes sense to ease in with grains that are simple to break down. Rice, buckwheat, and corn are naturally gluten-free and tend to sit well even on the newest of tummies, while still delivering the slow-release energy babies need between milk feeds. Once those first foods are established, branching out into less familiar gluten-free grains, quinoa, teff, amaranth, adds welcome variety and a useful boost of minerals like iron and zinc.

Three Ways to Make It Fun, Not Just Functional

Weaning doesn't have to be purely practical. A little creativity goes a long way toward turning mealtimes into something you both enjoy.

Idea one

Build a Rainbow Plate

Steam and puree a few vegetables separately, carrot, broccoli, beetroot, and spoon them onto the plate side by side rather than mixed together. The colour alone tends to hold a baby's attention, and it's an easy way to offer variety without extra effort.

Idea two

Let Them Lead

Baby-led weaning, offering soft-cooked vegetable batons or fruit for your baby to pick up and explore themselves, builds confidence with food and hand-eye coordination at the same time. Messy, but worth it.

Idea three

Play With Shape

Stars, moons, simple animal outlines, cutting familiar foods into playful shapes (or cooking pancakes in a shaped pan) can turn a reluctant eater into a curious one, purely through presentation.

Try This: 3-Ingredient Gluten-Free Pancakes

From 7 months

Banana and Buckwheat Pancakes

Mash half a ripe banana, then whisk in one egg yolk and two tablespoons of rice or buckwheat flour until you have a smooth batter. Spoon small rounds into a lightly oiled non-stick pan and cook gently on each side until golden. Egg is one of the foods introduced early under current UK weaning guidance, so if it's already a familiar part of your baby's diet this is a lovely way to use it, and as always, introduce anything new on its own first and watch how your baby responds.

A note from MOCHi

There's no race here. Some babies dive in, some take their time, and both are completely normal. Follow your baby's lead, keep it low-pressure, and enjoy the mess.

From first purees to independent feeding, MOCHi's range is designed to make mealtimes that little bit easier for both of you.
