Choosing a Babysitter or Nanny: What Actually Matters

5 min read · MOCHi

Handing your baby over to someone else, even for a few hours, is one of the harder decisions in early parenthood. Whether it's a return to work, some time to yourself, or just a proper night's sleep, here's what's actually worth checking before you trust someone with that job.

Before You Meet Anyone

Get clear on what you actually need first. Is this someone purely to watch your baby, or do you want them engaging in play and development too? Will they be expected to help with light housework? How many hours, and which days? The clearer you are, the easier it is to spot the right fit when you find them.

What to look for once you're meeting candidates

  • References matter more than a good interview. A recommendation from someone you trust, or a candidate with a genuine track record, is worth far more than how well someone presents on the day.
  • Ask for a paid trial period. A week is enough to see how your baby responds and, just as importantly, how comfortable you feel leaving the room.
  • Watch how they talk to your baby. Eye contact, patience, and tone tell you a lot, babies are surprisingly good judges of character themselves.
  • Ask about safety and first aid. Basic knowledge of infant first aid and choking response is a meaningful plus, not just a nice extra.
  • Notice their hygiene habits. How often they wash their hands and what they do after a nappy change matters more than it might seem.
  • Ask their view on screen time. If a phone rarely leaves their hand, that's worth a direct conversation before you start, not after.
  • Look for genuine warmth. This is someone who'll become part of your baby's world, not just a pair of hands.
  • Trust matters more than confidence. Small inconsistencies or vague answers are worth paying attention to.

A UK-Specific Check Worth Adding

If you're hiring a nanny or childminder in the UK, it's worth asking to see a valid DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate, and checking whether they're Ofsted-registered if that applies to the role you need. These are standard safeguards, and a genuine, experienced candidate will expect to be asked.

Once They're In

If something still feels off after all the boxes are ticked, that's worth listening to. A good fit is felt as much as it's checked off a list, and there's no shame in trusting that instinct over a strong CV.
