So much happens in that first year, it's easy to miss just how much your baby is changing week to week. Here's a plain-English look at what's actually going on physically, mentally and emotionally, and small ways you can support it along the way.
Growth is fastest in these early months, with noticeable jumps in height and weight, especially early on. Motor skills build in a fairly reliable order too, head control comes first, then sitting unsupported, then crawling, and eventually those first wobbly steps. Alongside this, hand and finger strength develops, which is why grasping and holding objects gets steadily more confident as the months go on.
Your baby's understanding of the world expands quickly too. Visual perception sharpens, and babies become increasingly drawn to faces, colours and patterns. Language develops well before speech does, babies understand far more than they can say, and most begin experimenting with their first single words somewhere in that first year.
Alongside the physical and mental leaps, a strong attachment is forming with the people around your baby, and that bond is what builds their sense of emotional security. Social skills are developing too, as babies learn to read and respond to the people around them. Crying, smiling and eye contact are their main tools for expressing how they feel, long before words are an option.
Every baby moves through these milestones at their own pace, and that's completely normal. Your health visitor is always the right person to ask if you have questions about your baby's individual progress.
From feeding to those first playful months, MOCHi's range is designed to support you through every stage of your baby's first year.
