A hive full of honey and brood is worth defending, and honeybees have some genuinely clever ways of doing it, some better documented than others.
A honeybee's stinger is barbed, so when it stings a mammal (thick, elastic skin), the stinger stays lodged in place, and the bee tears away part of its abdomen as it pulls free, which kills it. Against insects or other thin-skinned predators, the stinger is less likely to become stuck, so the bee can sting and survive to defend the hive again.
Propolis is a sticky, resin-like substance bees make from plant sap, wax and their own saliva. It's a genuine part of hive defence, but not quite the way it's sometimes described. Bees use it to seal cracks and gaps in the hive, which helps with temperature control and keeps out drafts and some pathogens. Its real standout use, though, is what happens after a fight: if a mouse or other intruder gets into the hive and is killed by the bees (usually by stinging or smothering it), it's often too large for the colony to physically remove. Rather than let it decay and spread disease, the bees encase it in propolis, effectively mummifying it, layer by layer, until it's fully sealed. It's a genuinely remarkable behaviour, just not a "trap" bees set at the entrance.
Japanese honeybees (a subspecies of the Asian honeybee) have a well-documented defence against giant hornets, a genuine predator that can devastate a hive. When a hornet scout approaches, dozens of bees swarm around it and vibrate their flight muscles, forming a tight ball. The heat generated inside the ball can reach around 45°C, combined with a build-up of carbon dioxide, which is enough to kill the hornet while the bees themselves can tolerate the temperature, just. It's one of the more remarkable examples of collective insect defence, and it's specific to this subspecies, not honeybees generally.
Bees are largely self-sufficient at defending their hives from natural predators. The bigger threat to bee populations today is habitat loss, pesticide use, and disease, not predators, which is worth remembering next time you're choosing what to plant in the garden.
