We stock Wedderspoon Manuka honey graded two ways, by KFactor and by MGO. Here's what KFactor actually involves, and what holds true across the whole range regardless of which number is on the label.
KFactor is Wedderspoon's own grading system, built around counting Manuka pollen grains under a microscope. The higher the number, the higher the proportion of Manuka pollen in the honey, our KFactor 12+ guarantees at least 65%, and KFactor 16+ guarantees at least 75%, monofloral strength. It's a genuinely thoughtful, long-standing way of confirming the bees really were foraging on Manuka bushes.
On top of that, Wedderspoon's honey meets New Zealand's official "Manuka5" standard: a five-attribute test the Ministry for Primary Industries has required for all exported Manuka honey since February 2018, combining four chemical markers from the nectar with a DNA marker from Manuka pollen. It's independent, government-verified confirmation, not just a brand's own word for it.
We also stock Wedderspoon honey graded by MGO (methylglyoxal content) rather than KFactor, since MGO has become the number most customers already recognise and find easiest to compare between jars. These jars aren't rated on KFactor's pollen count, but they're held to the same underlying standards as the rest of the range we stock: traceable from hive to jar, glyphosate-free, antibiotic-free, raw and unpasteurised, and sourced and packed in New Zealand. Different number on the label, same standard behind it.
KFactor is really a wider quality promise, not just a pollen count. It also covers Non-GMO Project verification, testing for pesticide, herbicide and antibiotic residues, full traceability from the New Zealand hive to the jar on our shelf, and keeping the honey raw and unpasteurised throughout, which is what protects its natural enzymes and colour.
It's not all lab work, either. Wedderspoon's quality checks include sensory assessment of taste, smell and texture on every batch, so a jar isn't just passing on paper, it's genuinely checked for the rich, distinctive flavour and smooth texture Manuka honey is meant to have.
Government-mandated chemical and DNA testing, purity screening, full traceability, and raw, unpasteurised honey throughout: that's the standard every jar of Wedderspoon we stock is held to, whichever number ends up on the label. KFactor adds a pollen count on top of that for the jars that carry it, which is one more reason we're confident recommending it, but it's not the only honest way to grade a genuinely good jar.
KFactor or MGO, every jar we stock is raw, traceable, and independently tested.
