We're a small team, so we won't pretend to have a grand sustainability programme. What we do have are a handful of practical changes we've actually made, and we thought you'd rather know the honest, everyday version than a polished mission statement.
If your order arrives in a box that isn't printed with our branding, that's deliberate. We reuse boxes wherever they're still in good condition rather than breaking them down for recycling and using a fresh one, it's a small thing but it adds up. For the smaller number of parcels that need extra protection, we use starch packing chips instead of plastic ones, they dissolve harmlessly in water if you ever need to get rid of them.
A lot of what we stock, including our Wedderspoon range, travels a long way to reach the UK. Where possible, we ship by sea rather than air, it takes longer but has a far smaller footprint. We've written more about what that actually involves in Sailing Towards a Greener Future.
We keep an eye on water use day to day rather than working to a fixed target, and we're upgrading our lighting and heating to more efficient options, but only as older equipment reaches the end of its working life. We'd rather not bin something that's still doing its job just for the sake of a quick upgrade.
We hire locally where we can, which cuts down on commuting. We also work flexibly and from home when it makes sense, particularly in very hot or otherwise difficult weather, so the team can stay comfortable and safe rather than travelling in for the sake of it.
Small changes, made properly, rather than a long list for its own sake.
