If you've spotted a small silver fern symbol on a Wedderspoon jar, that's the New Zealand FernMark, a genuine, government-backed mark of origin. Here's what it does confirm, and what a different, equally real standard covers instead.
The FernMark Licence Programme is run by New Zealand Story, a New Zealand government-backed organisation, and it exists to give genuine New Zealand exporters a protected way to show their connection to the country. It's trademarked in 43 jurisdictions worldwide, including the UK, specifically to stop anyone else cashing in on New Zealand's reputation without the real thing behind it. Every licence comes with a unique number you can look up online to confirm it's genuine.
Here's the distinction worth making clearly: the FernMark is a country-of-origin mark, it verifies that Wedderspoon is a genuine, licensed New Zealand business. It isn't a Manuka-specific test. The honey's own authenticity, whether it's really Manuka and how much, is a separate job done by the government's Manuka5 chemical and DNA testing, which we've written about in more detail in what is KFactor, and how Wedderspoon tests every jar. Wedderspoon's honey carries both: the FernMark for genuine New Zealand provenance, and Manuka5 for genuine Manuka honey. Two different, equally real checks, each doing what it's actually designed to do.
Manuka only grows in New Zealand, so a genuine country-of-origin mark and a genuine Manuka authenticity test aren't redundant, they're both part of the same reassurance from two different angles. It's a small silver fern on a label, but it represents a real, protected, independently verifiable claim, not just a nice logo.
